Veterans Day 2017: Events, Discounts, etc.

Good day, Vets!

I usually post Veteran's Day benefits on Facebook, but there are quite a few this year, so I thought I'd dust off the ol' Blogger and post them up on here. I haven't used this website in years! Well, this is the perfect reason.

I'll try to make these as easy as possible for you to obtain. In most cases, you just need to show up with some sort of proof of your military service. It's also worth noting that these are not just for veterans, but for folks currently serving in the military, though if you're overseas, you can only take advantage of the online offers.

And of course, the list of restaurants offering free or discounted meals:

And the list of retailers and special events for Veterans Day.

And just a reminder, these business offer military discounts year-round. You will have to mention your military status at purchase, and I know that's no fun, but as a civilian (well, a dependent too), I want you to know that we want you to have this. Your country wants you to have this. When people say "Support the Troops" this is one of the ways how. Take your discount. It's honestly the very least this country can do for you, so don't be afraid to ask for it and use it.

  • Aeropostle
  • Apple
  • Disney World
  • Dress Barn
  • Great Clips
  • Home Depot (with a note that they stopped doing this, but then started again, so it's possible they will stop again in the future)
  • Merrell (online)
  • Pottery Barn
  • Sears

Here is a list of other military discounts offered year-round, but many of them have some small print attached. But if you love discounts, then you should look into these.

------------------------------------
My spiel

I know that you didn't enter into the military so someday you might get 10% off on pancakes. You did it undoubtedly for a better life, education, love of your country and people, and perhaps a multitude of other reasons. But it's not the why that matters. It's that you did it at all. You put yourself in harm's way and endured many hardships that most of us will never understand. There are a few ways that we can say thank you, and pushing companies to offer discounts is merely one of them.

For civilians - just in case you're wondering what the other things are that we can do to support troops, let me list those:

  1. Vote for representatives who have veteran interests in mind. Reps who will vote and advocate for:
    • Decent pay raises for military members
    • Free and accessible health care for vets
    • Housing for homeless vets
    • Assistance in finding and keeping jobs for returning military and reservists
    • Educational and teaching opportunities for former military
  2. Talk to Veterans about their service. What they did, where, what it was like, if they liked it... Seriously, open a dialogue. Ask them what they think civilians should know.
  3. Know the difference between the holidays:
    • Memorial Day (we memorialize those who died for our country)
    • Armed Forces Day (we honor those currently serving in the military)
    • Veterans Day (we honor all those who have served in the military)
  4. Support the troops monetarily. And don't buy those stupid "Support the troops" ribbon magnets you put on cars. Those are made in China and benefit no one. Instead, try a bumper sticker or magnet from a helpful military organization.
    1. Military OneSource
    2. Military.com
    3. USO
    4. Operation We Are Here
    5. Wounded Warrior Project
Thank you and have a good holiday!
